Funeral of tragic Ballycastle woman takes place

THE FUNERAL has taken place of Karen Coyles, the Ballycastle woman whose remains were found on a beach in Scotland last week.

Ms. Coyles, who was 47, had disappeared on September 11. Hundreds of people had taken part in a massive search operation which had been launched as soon as the disappearance was reported.

She had last been seen after arriving home from Dublin where she had captained a team from the Ballycastle Camogie Club to success at the all-Ireland sevens tournament.

However, next morning she had failed to turn up at the University of Ulster in Coleraine, where she worked in the Biomedical Sciences Research Institute.

Her car was then found parked outside McQuillan’s GAA club in Ballycastle, where her camogie club was based.

The Coyles family had issued a statement following the tragic news.

In it they thanked everyone who had been involved in the search for Karen and for their support.

The statement continued: “We are devastated at the loss of a beautiful, talented and beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend, but are comforted in the knowledge that Karen is now safe in the arms of her beloved mother. She will always be in our hearts.”

The Funeral was held on September 30. Requiem Mass was held in St. Patrick’s and St. Brigid’s Church, Ballycastle. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery. For full details see below.
