Guitarist and songwriter Marvin Tarplin passes away

THE guitarist and songwriter Marvin  Tarplin, who was a member of The Miracles, has passed away. He was 70.

Known as Marv, Mr. Tarplin had a long association with Smokey Robinson, who had formed The Miracles.

He shared the composing credits for what became one of the greatest hits for The Miracles, The Tracks Of My Tears (1965), see below. Other hits that he co-wrote included My Girl Has Gone (1965), I Like It Like That (1964) and (Point It Out) 1968.

Mr. Tarplin also co-wrote several of Marvin Gaye’s hits which were produced by Smokey Robinson. These included Ain’t That Peculiar (1965) and I’ll Be Doggone (1965).

He was to leave The Miracles shortly after Smokey Robinson departed in 1973. Mr. Robinson encouraged his old friend to join him in Los Angeles where their creative association was to continue until 2008 when Mr. Tarplin retired.
