Nobel prize will stand for Canadian professor who had passed away

THE NOBEL Prize for Medicine will go to Canadian scientist Ralph Steinman, despite the fact that he had passed away shortly before news of the honour had been released.

Doubt over whether the decision would be ratified arose because the Nobel Foundation has a rule which prevents prizes being awarded posthumously.

However, officials have decided that their decision will stand as it was taken in good faith.

Professor Steinmen, who was 68, had been suffering from pancreatic cancer.

He had shared the award with Professor Bruce Beutler and Professor Jules Hoffman.

Professor Steinman was honoured for his work in revolutionising the understanding of the immune system. He had discovered the dendritic cell, which helps fight-off infection.

In fact, his own life was prolonged by the use of a dendcritic-cell based therapy which he had developed himself.
