Comedian and entertainer Max Bygraves passes away

THE comedian and entertainer Max Bygraves has passed away at the age of 89.

Mr. Bygraves story was one of rags to riches. Born Walter William Bygraves (he was nicknamed Max after doing Max Miller impressions while serving in the RAF), he often recalled the hardships the family had faced during his childhood.

But his talents were to take him from hardship to the heights of the entertainment world. At one point was one of Britain’s highest paid performers with his television shows watched by millions.

His ‘singalongamax’ recordings — featuring many old favourites — were adored by fans as were his ‘I wanna tell you a story’ routines. He also penned a number of songs which became hits, and contributed to his 31 golden discs.

After appearing as support for Judy Garland, during her month of performances at the London Palladium, she was so impressed that an invitation was issued to appear with her in New York.

Over the years he appeared in 19 Royal Variety Performances, the first of which was in 1950.

In recent times, Max had been battling Alzheimer’s and had been living with one of his daughters, Christine Green, in Australia. A number of months ago Mrs. Green had appealed to fans to send postcards to her father. She said that one of his few remaining pleasures was walking to collect the mail each morning. It is understood that many fans had responded to the appeal.
