Science fiction writer Harry Harrison passes away

THE science fiction writer Harry Harrison has passed away. He was 87.

He will be best remembered for his Stainless Steel Rat series. He published the first of the comic space opera series in 1961. The last in the series, which features the anti-hero character Slippery Jim DiGriz (aka The Stainless Steel Rat) came out in 2010.

One of his other books was used as the basis for a Hollywood movie. The dystopian novel Make Room! Make Room!, which was published in 1966, inspired the film Soylent Green (1973), starring Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson.

The book had looked at an over-populated world facing food shortages.

During his career Mr. Harrison produced dozens of novels and short stories and was highly respected by science fiction readers across the world.

Born in the United States, Mr. Harrison had at times lived in Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Mexico and England.

In 2009 he was presented with the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
