THE author Nina Bawden has passed away. She was 87.
Ms. Bawden wrote more than 40 books during her career and enjoyed success with works for both children and adults.
One of her most popular works was Carrie’s War which was based on her experiences after being evacuated to South Wales during the Second World War, aged 14. The book was dramatised by the BBC in 2004.
Her experiences in life were reflected in many of the other works she wrote. One of her books for children, The Peppermint Pig, was based on an old family tale. The book, which is now regarded as a modern classic, won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize in 1976.
In 1987 she was nominated for the Booker Prize for her novel Circles of Deceit.
Ms. Bawden was made a C.B.E. in 1995 and her lifetime’s contribution to literature was recognised in 2004 when she received the St. Dupont Golden Pen Award.
Tragedy struck in 2002 when she was seriously injured and her husband, Austen Kark, was killed when the train in which they were passengers crashed at Potters Bar near London.
One of her final books, Dear Austen (2005), was written in the form of a series of letters to her late husband and told the story of the rail crash.
