Tributes are paid to former Director of Public Prosecutions

TRIBUTES have been paid to Sir Alasdair Fraser, QC, who was a former Director of Public Prosecutions in Northern Ireland. He was 65.

Sir Alasdair was born in Glasgow in 1946, but his family moved to Northern Ireland in 1950.

After reading law at Trinity College, Dublin, he was called to the Bar in Northern Ireland in 1970. Within three years he had joined the newly formed Department of Director of Public Prosecutions.

He was appointed DPP in 1989 and served in the post until his retirement in September 2010.

During his time in office his department dealt with many controversial and difficult cases.

He was knighted in 2000 for services to the criminal justice system.

Tributes to Sir Alasdair were led by Justice Minister David Ford,

He said: “The contribution sir Alasdair made to the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland cannot be underestimated. He was committed to ensuring that the prosecution service responded to the concerns of society, whilst always being independent, fair and effective.

“I have no doubt that his legacy of 40 years’ dedicated service will ensure that this ethos remains central to the PPS.”

Sir Alasdair’s Funeral took place on Wednesday (June 20) in Belfast. For full details, see below.
