Discovered remains may be those of Richard III

DNA tests are to be carried out on human remains discovered by archaeologists who are searching for the grave of King Richard III in England.

The experts, who are from the University of Leicester, have been excavating a portion of ground in Leicester which is today the site of a carpark but in 1485, at the time of Richard’s death in the battle of Bosworth, was where the Franciscan friary of Greyfriars stood.

The King, who reigned from 1483 to 1485 and was 32 at the time of his death, was buried in the friary, although it was believed his remains may have been removed at a later date.

The archaeologists began their search late last month and had already uncovered clear signs of the former church. But now Richard Taylor from the University of Leicester has announced that, what he called “a dramatic new turn” had taken place with the discovery of human remains.

Analysis of the bones, using DNA samples supplied by descendants of the King, will now take place, but it could be weeks before the results are known.
