John Freeman was a tireless campaigner for peace

The death has taken place of John Freeman who was a former trade union leader and peace campaigner in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Freeman was the regional secretary of the transport union the ATGWU, which is now part of Unite.

He was a high-profile figure in the trade union movement who was also a former President of the Northern committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

Mr. Freeman was a tireless campaigner for peace and was never afraid to berate politicians while urging them to do more to bring about an end to violence.

In the 1980s he helped establish the Enkalon Foundation, which supports charitable projects which aim to improve the quality of life and harmony in Northern Ireland.

He was a trustee of the foundation which was set-up in the wake of the closure of the British Enkalon factory in Antrim. 

Mr. Freeman died suddenly on Tuesday. His Funeral will take place on Monday (March 21) at Roselawn Crematorium.
