Patients could be asked to state how they want to die

The terminally ill could be asked to write down how they want to die under the terms of a patients’ charter.

The charter has been drawn up by the Royal College of GPs and the Royal College of Nursing.

It has been prepared to cover England, but it is understood that the charter could be put in place in other areas of the United Kingdom.

Patients will be encouraged by their GPs to state clearly whether they want to be resuscitated in an effort to prolong life in the latter stages of an illness.

People will also be able to state how they wish to be treated in the final part of their lives.

It is envisaged that once a person records their wishes it would become a legally binding document which would then be stored on an NHS datebase.

The database would be consulted by medical staff involved in caring for the patient.

Dr. Clare Gerada from the Royal College of GPs said: “Care seems to break down at the very end. So often a GP has looked after someone really well, and then they are not there.”
