Physicist who developed WWII radar device passes away

THE DEATH has taken place of physicist Lee Davenport who developed a World War II radar device that helped the Allies win key battles. He was 95.

Dr. Davenport had worked at the secret MIT Radiation Laboratory where he developed the Signal Corps Radio system or the SCR-584 as it became known.

The microwave radar system was able to track enemy planes and then direct anti-aircraft units.

The system was sent ashore with troops on D-Day and was credited with helping troops win key battles.

Dr. Davenport was sent to France to continuing working on improving the radar system.

Following the war, Dr. Davenport taught at MIT and Harvard.
