Swine flu deaths increase in Northern Ireland

The number of people who have died from swine flu has increased in Northern Ireland.

Figures released by the Public Health Agency show that 17 deaths have now occurred. This is an increase of three since the last figures were released last week.

According to the PHA 14 of the victims had underlying health problems. Of the remaining victims two did not have any other health problems before being admitted to hospital with flu-like symptoms, while information on the remaining victim is not yet available.

The Agency said the rate of new flu cases being confirmed is slowing.

Flu cases remain higher in the 15-44 year age group.

John Compton, chief executive of the Health and Social Care Board, said that approximately 3% of all patients being treated in hospitals in Northern Ireland had swine flu or were suspected of having it.

He added: “This in not unusual at this time of the year when flu is most prevalent

“The service continues to be busy with flu and seasonal winter pressures continuing to pose a challenge, however, these pressures are being effectively managed across Northern Ireland and normal escalation arrangements are in place to cope with any expected demands at this time.”
