Tributes are paid to former newsreader Kenneth Kendall

TRIBUTES have been paid to the former newsreader Kenneth Kendall who has passed away. He was 88.

Mr. Kendall became the first newsreader to appear on screen at the BBC in 1955. He had originally joined the corporation as a radio announcer.

By the time he retired from newsreading in 1981, Mr. Kendall had become one of the most recognisable faces on British television.

His unflappable style had made him one of the most respected newsreaders. In 1979 he was voted the most popular newscaster by readers of the Daily Mirror.

In 1975 he had become the main presenter of the BBC’s flagship Nine O’Clock News.

Away from the news studio Mr. Kendall displayed a lighter side. He made guest appearances on shows such as Morecambe and Wise and Dr. Who. He also had a cameo role as a newsreader in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

After leaving the BBC, Mr. Kendall worked on the popular Channel 4 game show Treasure Hunt with Anneka Rice.

In recent years he had lived in retirement on the Isle of Wight.

Mr. Kendall had suffered a stroke only weeks before he passed away.
