Tributes are paid to Cookstown funeral director

TRIBUTES have been paid to Cookstown funeral director Robin Steenson who has passed away following a motorcycle accident. He was 71.

Mr. Steenson, who lived just outside the town, died after his motorcycle struck the central reservation of the M1 motorway on Sunday (September 23) near the junction for Coalisland.

He was a highly experienced motorcycle rider and had been a member of the Cookstown motorcycle club.

The father-of-two was a third generation funeral director. He took charge of R. Steenson & Son in 1965 on the retirement of his father. The company was formed by his grandfather more than a century ago.

Mr. Steenson was a highly respected member of the Cookstown business community. As well as working as funeral director, he had also been a driving instructor — being qualified to train motorcyclists, car drivers and HGV drivers. He was also a former chairman of town’s road safety committee.

His great skills as a funeral director and embalmer not only benefited the mid-Ulster community. He was called upon on a numerous occasions to join a team of experts to help deal with the aftermath of disasters across the world.

Many tributes have been paid from within the funeral profession and the Cookstown community.

Mr. Steenson is survived by his wife, Gillian, and children Bryan and Helen.

In accordance with his wishes, the family home and the funeral will be strictly private.
