Tributes are paid to the man who put colour into digital photography

THE research scientist Bryce Bayer, whose invention made it possible for digital cameras to capture colour images, has passed away at the age of 83.

Mr. Bayer had worked for the Eastman Kodak company throughout his career.

It was in the early 1970s that he completed his work on a device that could capture detailed colour images. His invention — which involved light-sensitive elements being formed on a silicon chip — received its patent in the United States in 1976 and is now known as the Bayer Filter.

Within months of the filter being patented, two other Kodak researchers revealed their design for the first digital camera.

Today the Bayer Filter is used in millions of digital devices  — including cameras, mobile telephones and video cameras — to enable them to capture colour images.

Mr. Bayer’s contribution to the digital age was recognised in 2009 by the Royal Photographic Society which awarded him its Progress Award.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers awarded the inventor its first Camera Origination and Imaging Medal.
