Former Coronation Street star Bill Tarmey passes away

THE former Coronation Street star Bill Tarmey has passed away. He was 71.

Mr. Tarmey had worked on the TV soap for more than 30 years before bowing out in 2010.

He had been a successful nightclub singer before landing the role of Jack Duckworth on the long-running ITV show. For most of his time in the soap he appeared alongside his on-screen wife Vera, who was played by Liz Dawn.

Mr. Tarmey, who was a life-long heavy smoker, had suffered a heart attack when he was 35 and over the years had undergone two heart bypass operations.

He left the show in 2010, citing ill health and his desire to care for a young relative as the reasons for leaving what he always called “a wonderful bloody job”.

Millions tuned-in to see Jack’s final scene in which he passed away while dozing in his favourite chair and dreaming that he was dancing with Vera. Liz Dawn, who had left the soap two years before, had returned to shoot the moving scene.

He published his autobiography, Jack Duckworth And Me, in 2010.

In a statement, his family said the actor had passed away while in Tenerife.
