TRIBUTES have been paid to the former cricketer Kevin Curran who has passed away aged 53.
Mr. Curran played for Zimbabwe as well as at county level in England in the 1980s and 90s.
He was a right-arm fast-medium bowler and middle-order batsman. His international appearances for Zimbabwe included the 1983 and 1987 World Cups, but he was already out of the side by the time the country was granted test status in 1992.
By that time he was playing for Northants, having started out with Gloucestershire when he began playing in England in the mid-1980s.
During his career he scored 15,740 first class runs in 324 matches. He had taken 605 wickets. While playing at county level Mr. Curran had on five occasions made over 1,000 runs in a season.
After retiring as a player in 1999 Mr. Curran turned his skills to coaching, first as an assistant coach with Zimbabwe and then with Namibia. He took charge of Zimbabwe in late 2005 and remained as coach until 2007.
In recent times he had been coaching Mashonaland Eagles, one of Zimbabwe’s top teams.
Mr. Curran collapsed and died while jogging in the city of Mutare.
