Tributes are paid to songwriter Eddie Snyder

Tributes have been paid to the songwriter Eddie Snyder who has passed away aged 92.

He will be best remembered for Strangers In The Night which was a massive hit for Frank Sinatra.

Mr. Snyder is credited with writing the lyrics with Charles Singleton.

The  number was originally written by Croatian composer Ivo Robic who then sold the rights to German composer and bandleader Bert Kaempfert for use in the film A Man Could Get Killed (1966).

The song was first recorded by Jack Jones but within weeks Sinatra had recorded what was to become the hit version.

Despite it being one of the singer’s biggest hits, Sinatra never really liked the song and would make strong comments about it during some concerts.

The recording earned him two Grammys while Mr. Snyder won a Golden Globe for best original film song.

Mr. Snyder enjoyed success with other songs, including Spanish Eyes and Bitter With The Sweet, but it was Strangers In The Night which was to prove the big earner.

He once said the song had “made a bum out of me”, because its success meant he did not have to work again.
