Actor Conrad Bain passes away

THE actor Conrad Bain, who appeared in the TV comedy Diff’rent Strokes, has passed away. He was 89.

Mr. Bain had already enjoyed a long and successful career on both the stage and on screen before he joined the cast of Diff’rent Strokes (see below).

In the show, which ran between 1978 and 1986, Mr. Bain played a wealthy widower who had promised his dying housekeeper, who was black, that he would bring up her two sons — played by Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges.

The show, with its racially mixed plotlines, was a hit with viewers although it did face criticism from some people who regarded it as being patronising.

Before joining Diff’rent Strokes, Mr. Bain had been a familiar face to TV viewers following his role in another popular TV comedy, Maude.

His other TV credits included The Love Boat, Mr. President and Unfortgetable.

He also made appearances in a number of movies including Madigan (1968), Coogan’s Bluff (1968), The Anderson Tapes (1971) and Postcards From The Edge (1990).

Mr. Bain had been married for more than 60 years to the artist Monica Bain who passed away in 2009. He is survived by a daughter and two sons.
