Actor George Baker passes away

THE ACTOR George Baker, who was best known was his role as TV’s Chief Inspector Wexford, has passed away. He was 80.

Mr. Baker had enjoyed a career which over 60 years had seen him appear on films and television.

His many film credits included The Dam Busters and The Spy Who Loved Me.

The author of the James Bond books, Ian Fleming, had wanted Mr. Baker to play his spy on the big screen but at the time he was tied to a contract with a rival studio.

His television work included Minder and Spooks, but two roles in particular stand out from his work for the small screen. He was outstanding as the Emperor Tiberius in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Robert Graves’s I, Claudius, and then went on to play Chief Inspector Wexford in The Ruth Rendell Mysteries.

Away from acting, Mr. Baker was a successful writer for both radio and television, and also wrote about cookery.

He had suffered a stroke and died of pneumonia.
