One of the last code talkers of World War II passes away

The death has taken place of Lloyd Oliver who was one of the last so-called code talkers of the Second World War.

Mr. Oliver, who was 88, was a member of the Navajo community.

He joined the US Marines along with many other Navajo speakers.

They became a key part of the Marines communications operation.

Using a code based upon the Navajo language, Mr. Oliver and his fellow country men were able to transmit vital information on the battle field which proved impossible for the Japanese to understand.

The code talkers took part in every assault carried out by the Marines in the Pacific.

Mr. Oliver passed away at a hospice in Arizona.

It is believed that his death means that only one of the original code talkers now remains alive.
