Jazz great Ray Bryant passes away

The jazz great Ray Bryant has passed away at the age of 79.

The pianist and composer had played with all the greats during his long career which began in Philadelphia where became the house pianist in the famous Blue Note Club during the 1950s.

Among those he performed with were Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker.

After his time in Philly he went on to tour with singer Carmen McRae.

He also recorded with Dizzy Gillespie.

Mr. Bryant played with a trio, which sometimes included his older brother Tommy.

His first hit came in 1960 with Little Susie which was recorded after he moved to New York.

Mr. Bryant toured extensively, including Europe and Japan as well as recording a number of albums.

His last release was In the Back Room (2008).

His compositions were also recorded by others, including Cubano Chant by Oscar Peterson and Changes by Miles Davis.
