Hundreds attend funeral of former Irish minister

Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of former Irish government minister Brian Lenihan.

The former minister for finance died last week aged 52 after a long battle with cancer.

The funeral mass in Dublin was attended by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the President Mary McAleese.

Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and finance minister Sammy Wilson also attended.

The funeral service took place in St. Mochta’s Church in Porterstown, Dublin, which is in the heart of Mr. Lenihan’s constituency.

He was first elected for Fianna Fail in the Dublin West constituency in 1996.

Since his death thousands of people in the area had signed a book of condolence.

As a mark of respect the Dáil had been adjourned for the day.

Following the service Mr. Lenihan was laid to rest in St. David’s Church graveyard in Kilsallaghan.
