TRIBUTES have been paid to Phillip Cottrell the former BBC journalist who has died after being attacked in New Zealand. He was 43.
Mr. Cottrell, who was from Scotland, had emigrated in 2006 and had been living in Wellington.
He had been working as a bulletins editor at Radio New Zealand. On Saturday (December 10) he left the station’s offices in the city centre at 5.30 a.m. after completing a shift. Forty minutes later he was found with serious head injuries in a nearby street.
Mr. Cottrell never regained consciousness and the decision was taken to switch off his life support machine.
Police in Wellington have launched a murder investigation.
Former colleagues and friends at BBC Scotland were among those to pay tribute.
In a statement they said: “Phillip was a talented journalist with a passion for accuracy and precision. He leaves behind many, many friends in every corner of the world who will be distraught to learn of his loss.”
