Tributes are paid to bandleader Edmundo Ros

TRIBUTES have been paid to the bandleader Edmundo Ros who has died aged 100.

Mr. Ros had made his brand of Latin-American music popular in not only England, which was his adopted home, but in many countries around the world.

Born in Trinidad and educated in Venezuela, Mr. Ros had arrived in England in the late 1930s to attend the Royal Academy of Music in London.

He could play several instruments including the saxophone and was soon performing at various nightclubs in the capital.

By the mid-1950s he had opened his own club in London and was also a successful recording artist — his 1949 album The Wedding Samba was eventually to sell one million copies.

He was also a well-known personality on radio.

Eventually he was to give up his club and concentrate on touring the world with his band.

He reached the height of his success in the 1960s, but even today his records continue to sell in number of countries including Japan and Scandinavia.

Mr. Ros retired in 1975 and in recent years had been living in Spain with his second wife, Susan.
