Veteran reporter who covered Kennedy assassination passes away

THE death has taken place of the veteran reporter Tom Wicker who was travelling with Presdent Kennedy on the day JFK was assassinated. 

Mr. Wicker, who was 85, passed away at his home in Vermont.

On the fateful day in November, 1963 when President Kennedy visited Dallas, Mr. Wicker was a New York Times journalist assigned to the White House press corps.

He was travelling in the official motorcade when Lee Harvey Oswald opened fire at Dealey Plaza killing the President.

He report of the assassination, which was to capture the horror, detail and colour of the events, was to become what is regarded as the most widely read account of the tragedy by any reporter on the day of the killling.

Mr. Wicker went on to become Washington bureau chief of the Times and a respected political columnist. He was named a Associate Editor of the newspaper in 1968,

He published 20 books including novels and political memoir.
