Star of the silent movie era passes away

THE death has taken place of Barbara Kent who was a star during the era of silent movies. She was 103.

After winning the Miss Hollywood beauty pageant in 1925, Universal Studios offered her an acting contract and she was to make her film debut the following year in the western Prowlers of the Night.

Ms. Kent went on to star in a number of films including No Man’s Law (1927) and That’s My Daddy (1928).

Several of her later films were made during the period when sound was being introduced to the movie industry.

In Lonesome, which was made in 1928, some of the sequences featured sound.

She also appeared in Welcome Danger (1929) which was Harold Lloyd’s first talking film.

Although she was to appear in a number of films produced in the early 1930s, including Vanity Fair (1932) and Oliver Twist (1933), her enthusiasm for acting had already begun to wane, and she decided to retire.
