Football world mourns the death of Gary Speed at 42

THE football world is in mourning following the death at 42 of the Wales football manager Gary Speed.

Mr. Speed’s body was found at his home in Huntington, Chester. Local police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

He had been appointed manager of the Wales side last December and had been credited with making major progress with rebuilding the team.

The former midfielder had enjoyed a successful career at both club and national level.

He had won 85 caps for Wales over a 14-year period, during which he had captained the side on 44 occasions and had scored seven international goals.

Mr. Speed’s club career had begun at Leeds United in the side which won the Football League title in 1992. He then progressed to the Premiership where he first played for Everton and then moved to Newcastle.

He was to spend six years with the Magpies before moving to Bolton. He ended his playing career, which had spanned 22 seasons, with Sheffield United.

Many tributes were paid to the young manager both by former playing colleagues and clubs he had been with.

Following news of the death, the Liverpool forward and Wales international Craig Bellamy was left out of his club’s side which played Manchester City. It was reported that he was too upset to play.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said he had taken the decision to drop the player, adding: “At times like this football does become a little bit irrelevant. There’s no way that a game of football is more important than grief, and that  was the decision I made.”
