Tributes are paid to former cricketer Fred Titmus

Tributes have been paid to the former cricketer Fred Titmus who has died aged 78.

Mr. Titmus was regarded as an outstanding off-spin bowler who was also skilled as a batsman.

He enjoyed a long career with Middlesex, having made his debut for the side as a 16-year-old in 1949 and playing his last game in 1982.

Mr. Titmus played for England 53 times.

While he did not put massive spin on the ball, Mr. Titmus made bowling to a perfect length the central core of his game. This approach was to prove immensely successful.

During his career he was to take 100 wickets in a season on 15 occasions. He also enjoyed eight seasons when he scored more than 1,000 runs and took more than 100 wickets.

He was to suffer a near career ending injury during England’s tour of the West Indies in 1967-68.

While swimming he lost several toes when he came in contact with a boat propeller.

However, Mr. Titmus recovered to resume his playing career.

He was appointed M.B.E. in 1977.
