Onedin Line star Peter Gilmore passes away

THE actor Peter Gilmore, who starred in the TV series The Onedin Line, has passed away at the age of 81.

Mr. Gilmore appeared in 91 episodes of the BBC series which ran for ten years from 1971.

The popular series, set in the 19th. Century, followed the fortunes of the Captain James Onedin, played by Mr. Gilmore, as he established his shipping business.

A number of sailing vessels were used during the filming of the series which was one of the most popular shows of its time.

Born in Germany, Mr. Gilmore was aged six when he was brought to England in the mid-1930s. He grew up in Yorkshire.

After leaving school at 14 to pursue his dream of becoming an actor Mr. Gilmore eventually got into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), but he failed to complete his studies.

His early work included an appearance in the TV series Ivanhoe in 1958, before landing roles in a number of the Carry On movies.

But it was his role in The Onedin Line (see below) which was to make him a household name.

After the series ended in 1980, Mr. Gilmore went on to make appearances in a number of TV shows, including Doctor Who and One By One.

His final work was in the TV movie On Dangerous Ground (1996), which starred Rob Lowe.

Mr. Gilmore passed away at a hospice in London following a a long illness.
