Bob Holness of Blockbusters fame passes away

BOB Holness, who will be remembered by many as the host of the TV quiz show Blockbusters, has passed away. He was 83.

Mr. Holness was in charge of the ITV show, which featured young contestants between 1983 and 1993 (see below).

Born in South Africa, Mr. Holness held the distinction of being the first actor to play the role of James Bond when he appeared in a radio production of Moonraker in 1956.

He began his broadcasting career with the BBC in the 1960s, working on several radio shows. After leaving the BBC in the mid 1970s he co-hosted the morning show on the London commercial radio station LBC.

But it was Blockbusters that was to seal his fame across the country.

After the show finished, Mr. Holness became the host of the popular BBC TV show Call My Bluff.
