Slight fall in the number of deaths recorded in Northern Ireland

THERE has been a slight fall in the number of deaths recorded in Northern Ireland in the third quarter of 2011 compared with the same period last year.

Figures released by the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency show that during the period covering July to September this year a total of 3,264 deaths were recorded, compared with 3,279 during the same period in 2010.

Of the 3,264 deaths, more women (1,653) than men (1,611) passed away.

Cancer remains the main cause of death. During the quarter a total of 1,024 people died from the disease with heart disease claiming 477 deaths and respiratory disease being recorded as the cause of 412 deaths.

There was a notable drop in the number of suicides for the quarter with 55 deaths being recorded, 23 fewer than in the same period last year.

Other causes of death were listed as alcohol (48) and drugs (25).

There was a slight fall in the number of deaths attributed to Clostridium Difficile. The figures show that 20 people died because of the illness compared with 26 deaths in the same period last year.

However, two more deaths were caused by the superbug MRSA during the period with ten deaths being recorded compared with 8 fatalities in the corresponding quarter.
