Car designer Sergio Pininfarina passes away

THE car designer Sergio Pininfarina has passed away at his home in Italy. He was 85.

Mr. Pininfarina’s father, Gian Battista, had started the Pininfarina company which has been responsible for designing nearly every Ferrari since the 1950s.

Sergio Pininfarina took over the campany in the mid-1960s following the death of his father. The firm is not only associated with the design of performance cars for a number of top companies, including Rolls Royce, Bentley and Maserati, but also produced vehicles in its own right.

During his time heading the company Mr. Pininfarina oversaw major advances in the way his designer perfected their work. Pininfarina was the first company in Italy to install a wind tunnel for testing their aerodynamic designs.

Mr. Pininfarina is credited with designing a number of top cars including the 1984 Ferrari Testarossa, the 2002 Ferrari Enzo (see below), the 2003 Maserati Quattroporte and the 2004 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti (see below).

He had stepped down from an active role in the company in 2006 to become honorary chairman.

The Pininfarina company continues to be one of the top car design firms in the world, see below.
