THE county music legend Kitty Wells has passed away at the age of 92.
Known as the Queen of Country Music, Kitty Wells became the first woman solo artist to achieve a number one hit. This was in 1952 with It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels, see below.
The hit, which the US Library of Congress has added to its recording registry of works of unusual historic merit, was to herald in a long period in which the she was the fans’ number one female country singer.
During her long career Kitty released more than 36 albums and notched-up 35 top 10 hits out of 81 songs which reached the charts.
Her other hits included Make Believe, The Things I Might Have Been, Heartbreak USA and Left To Right.
She entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1976 and received the Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music in 1986. She was also presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991.
In a statement her family said the singer had passed away after suffering a stroke.
