Tributes are paid to former Irish minister

Tributes have been paid to the former Irish finance minister Brian Lenihan who has died aged 52.

He had been battling pancreatic cancer since December 2009.

As finance minister in the Fianna Fail-led administration, Mr. Lenihan had spent his last months in office dealing with the economic crisis facing the State.

He had been involved in negotiating the massive bail out involving the IMF and the European Union.

Mr. Lenihan was a member of what could be described as a political dynasty — his father Brian, brother Conor and aunt Mary O’Rourke had all served in Irish governments.

Before being appointed as finance minister, Mr. Lenihan  had served as minister of justice and minister for children in other Fianna Fail administrations.

Tributes to him were led by Irish prime minister Enda Kenny.

He said: “Brian Lenihan exemplified a great sense of humanity in the public representation he gave”.

Mr. Lenihan is survived by his wife and two children.
