Tributes are paid to film producer Richard Zanuck

TRIBUTES have been paid to the veteran film producer Richard Zanuck who has died aged 77.

Mr. Zanuck came from what the film industry calls “Hollywood Royalty” — his father was the legendary producer Darryl Zanuck and his mother was the actress Virginia Fox.

His father, who was the first chief at 20th. Century Fox, made him head of production at the studio. While in the post he oversaw the release of such classics at The Sound Of Music (1965), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid  (1969) and MASH (1970).

After leaving the studio Mr. Zanuck spent the next forty years as an independent producer —working on films such as Jaws (1975), Cocoon (1985) and Driving Miss Daisy (1989), a film which went on to win him and his wife and collaborator, Lili Fini Zanuck, an Oscar for best picture.

In recent years he had worked with director Tim Burton on a number of projects, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and Alice In Wonderland (2010).

Mr. Zanuck’s last film, Dark Shadows (directed by Tim Burton), was released in early 2012 (see below).

Among those to pay tribute was the director Steven Spielberg.

He said: “He taught me everything I know about producing. He was one of the most honourable and loyal men of our profession and he fought tooth and nail for his directors.”
