Funeral takes place of RIR soldier killed in Afghanistan

The Funeral has taken place of Lance Corporal Stephen McKee from Banbridge who was killed while serving in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal McKee was 27 and had been serving with the 1st. Battalion Royal Irish Regiment when he was in was caught in a roadside explosion.

The centre of his hometown came to a standstill for the funeral.

Lance Corporal McKee was buried with full military honours.

The Funeral Service took place in Holy Trinity Parish Church.

His commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Colin Weir MBE, had already paid tribute to the young soldier.

He said: “Stephen McKee was the finest of men; he was irrepressible, he was utterly reliable and he was a fearsome warrior. As part of the Operations Company he fought the long battle to drive the enemy out of the Nad-e’Ali Canal zone and into the desert.

“Not only was he the finest of Irish soldiers, he was a man with great depths of resilience.”

After the Service Lance Corporal McKee was buried in the town’s New Cemetery. He was laid to rest beside his baby daughter Keeley who died a year ago.
