Funeral takes place of singer Bridie Gallagher

THE Funeral has taken place of the singer Bridie Gallagher.

Known as ‘The girl from Donegal’, Ms. Gallagher, whose married name was Livingstone, passed away on January 9, 2011, aged 87.

She had enjoyed worldwide fame with song such as A Mother’s Love’s A Blessing and The Green Glens Of Antrim (see below).

She was born in Creeslough, County Donegal, but moved to Belfast in the late 1940s to live with an aunt.

Her singing career took off in the 1950s when she began to make appearances in the London Palladium and the Royal Albert Hall.

To many she is regarded as Ireland’s first truly international pop star.

Ms. Gallagher’s singing was said to have melted the hearts of millions — especially the Irish diaspora.

She carried out a number of tours in the United States, Canada and Australia.

Ms. Gallagher passed away in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The Funeral Mass was held in St. Brigid’s Church, Belfast, followed by burial in Creeslough, Co. Donegal. For full details, see below.
