Tributes are paid to Welsh tenor and conductor

Tributes have been paid to the leading Welsh tenor and conductor Robert Tear who has died aged 72.

After attending King’s College Cambridge as a choral scholar, Mr. Tear made his operatic debut in 1966 in the role of Peter Quint in Benjamin Britten’s Turn  of the Screw.

He was to work closely with Britten for many years, taking on many of the roles the composer developed.

Mr. Tear featured in 250 recordings over his career, among these were many works by Britten including Death in Venice, Albert Herring and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

He also worked with Sir Michael Tippett, creating the role of Dov in The Knot Garden (1970). 

His last professional appearance was at the Royal Opera House in 2009 when he sang the role of the Emperor in Puccini’s Turandot.

Mr. Tear was awarded a CBE in 1984.

Among those to pay tribute was his agent Martin Kimble-White.

He said: “He was a major, major European and world artiste who had a fantastic varied career.”
