Funeral takes place of tragic father and sons

THE Funeral has taken place of the father and his two sons who died in an accident on their farm in Hillsborough.

The victims, 58-year-old Noel Spence and his two sons, Graham (30) and 22-year-old Nevin, died at a slurry tank on the farm on the Drumlough Road on Saturday.

The Funeral took place on Wednesday, September 19. A joint service was held in Ballynahinch Baptist Church. All three were buried in Lough Inch Cemetery.

Nevin Spence was one of Northern Ireland’s top rugby players and among the many mourners were players and officials from the sport. His Ulster rugby shirt was draped over his coffin.

During the Service, Emma Rice paid tribute to her father and brothers.

Mrs. Rice, who had to be treated in hospital after being overcome by fumes during Saturday’s rescue operation, told mourners: “They were gentlemen. They were hardworking men. They were not perfect, but they were genuine. They were the best of friends.”

The Reverend Rodney Stout, who conducted the Funeral Service, also paid tribute to all three victims.

He told mourners: “Noel Spence was a very generous man. He was a man of true grit. It would be difficult to find a more hospitable neighbour or trustworthy businessman.”
